The Top 5 Items Every Aquarist Should Have

Whether you’re setting up your very first aquarium or you’ve been keeping fish for years, having the right tools on hand can make aquarium maintenance faster, easier, and much less stressful.

You don’t need a closet full of aquarium gadgets to successfully keep fish. In fact, there are a handful of simple tools that I find myself recommending over and over again.

Here are my top 5 must-have items for any aquarist.

1. A Python Water Change System

If there’s one aquarium upgrade I recommend to almost everyone, it’s a Python-style water change system.

Water changes are one of the most important parts of aquarium maintenance, but carrying buckets back and forth from your sink to your aquarium can quickly become exhausting — especially if you have multiple tanks or a large aquarium.

A Python water change system allows you to drain and refill your aquarium directly from a faucet, eliminating most of the bucket hauling.

Why I love it:

  • Makes routine water changes dramatically easier
  • Saves time
  • Great for large aquariums
  • Especially helpful if you have multiple tanks
  • Makes it easier to stay consistent with water changes
  • No more carrying heavy buckets across the house!

For anyone with a larger planted tank, multiple aquariums, or simply a dislike of lugging buckets around, this is one of those purchases you’ll wonder how you lived without.

2. API Freshwater Master Test Kit

One of the biggest mistakes new aquarists make is assuming that their aquarium water is healthy because it looks clean.

Unfortunately, some of the most dangerous water-quality problems are completely invisible.

The API Freshwater Master Test Kit allows you to test important water parameters including ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and pH. API recommends regular testing because these parameters can change and potentially create harmful conditions for fish. (ApiFishCare)

Why every aquarist should have one:

  • Helps identify water-quality problems before they become emergencies
  • Useful when cycling a new aquarium
  • Helpful when troubleshooting sick or stressed fish
  • Allows you to monitor your aquarium instead of guessing
  • Great for establishing a baseline for your particular tank

You don’t necessarily need to test every parameter every single day, but having a reliable test kit available when you need it is incredibly important.

And remember: clear water doesn’t necessarily mean healthy water.

3. Magnetic Aquarium Cleaner With Scraper

Algae happens.

Even the most beautiful planted aquarium will eventually develop some algae on the glass. Instead of constantly reaching into the aquarium with your arm and getting soaked, a magnetic aquarium cleaner makes cleaning the glass much easier.

I particularly recommend getting one that includes a scraper, rather than just a soft cleaning pad.

Why it’s worth having:

  • Cleans aquarium glass without putting your hands in the tank
  • Makes routine algae removal quick
  • A scraper can tackle stubborn buildup
  • Great for planted aquariums where you want to keep the glass looking pristine
  • Makes maintenance much less of a chore

A magnetic cleaner is one of those inexpensive aquarium tools that you may not think you need — until you have one.

4. An Aquascaping Tool Set

If you keep live plants, an aquascaping tool set is an absolute game changer.

Planting, trimming, repositioning and maintaining aquatic plants can be surprisingly difficult with your hands alone. Long aquascaping tools give you much more precision and allow you to work inside the aquarium without constantly disturbing everything around the plant you’re working on.

A basic set usually includes things like:

  • Planting tweezers
  • Curved tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Straight scissors
  • Other specialized planting or maintenance tools

They’re especially useful for:

🌿 Planting carpeting plants
🌿 Replanting stem plants
🌿 Trimming aquatic plants
🌿 Removing dead leaves
🌿 Positioning plants around hardscape
🌿 Maintaining densely planted aquariums

Even if you’re not creating competition-level aquascapes, a good pair of long tweezers and scissors can make everyday plant maintenance so much easier.

5. API Pond Stress Coat

This one might be a little unexpected.

Most aquarists are familiar with regular aquarium water conditioners, but API POND STRESS COAT is one of my favorite options to keep on hand because the concentrated pond formula is designed to treat much larger volumes of water.

API states that POND STRESS COAT works instantly to remove chlorine and chloramines from tap water and neutralize the ammonia associated with chloramines. It also contains aloe vera and a slime-coat replenisher to help reduce fish stress. (ApiFishCare)

Why I like the pond formula:

  • Dechlorinates tap water
  • Neutralizes chloramines
  • Detoxifies the ammonia associated with chloramines
  • Concentrated formula
  • Available in large sizes
  • Makes a bottle last a very long time for aquarium keepers
  • Useful for water changes and adding new water

For example, API’s listed dosing for POND STRESS COAT is 15 mL per 60 gallons when adding water to a pond, with higher dosing recommended in certain situations. (ApiFishCare)

That concentration is one of the reasons I like having the larger pond formula available when maintaining multiple aquariums or larger tanks.

Important: Always follow the dosing instructions on the specific product you’re using and dose according to the amount of new water being treated.
